Can someone who knows what they’re talking about…
… explain the significance of midheaven for me? What dictates what sign a person’s midheaven will be in? How is it different to a person’s rising sign? Am I even using ‘midheaven’ the right way in a sentence?
My midheaven is in virgo (…..), but my rising sign is sagittarius. What does this mean?

The Midheaven is the sign that falls on the cusp of your 10th house, the house pertaining to career. In a way, it can act as a mask, much like the Asc., but it represents our goals, and means of achieving them, and the face we put on in the working world. It can show you the areas of work in which you strive in, and in what positions you feel most comfortable in. While the Rising sign is also a mask, and represents how you handle situations and interact with others, it is much more personal, being in your first house.

Midheaven (when we look at the horoscope) it is the point at High Noon directly the highest point in the sky the Sun (appears) to rise, while the Asc. (Rising sign) is the furthest point East the horizon was at the time of your birth. Your Sun placement falls in a house based upon that birth time and birth place (long.& lat) location.
So, let’s say you were born at 10:50 am at 83W11 41N19 — your Rising sign would be somewhere between Scorpio and Sag. Of course there is somewhat of a difference if you were born during daylight savings time, or war time. Also if you were born North or South declination. This issue is largely relative to Astronomy portions of horoscope erection.
As for the meaning of the Rising (1st house) and Mc (10th house)– we often take into consideration the Dsc (Descendant 7th House) and Nadir (4th house cusps) as well. These represent the Cardinal axis of the Zodiac. Your rising sign (significant of how you appear) just like the sun rise — So, other’s see you as a Sagittarius — if you were born a Virgo, then others see more Sagittarius presence.
If you have Virgo on the 10th house, you’re obviously very servient to others, devoted, responsibility conscious, and you lead the life of an apprentice, Jilly of all trades usually. Sometimes the profession (indicated by the 10th house) is one of a healing helping profession, or even that of a specialty craftsman.
Now — that’s a tiny nutshell to your question, but really, the focus in astrology is not the signs, but the planets and where they’re placed. If you are born with a stellium of planets in the first house (rising) they are all in Sagittarius — this really puts a whammy on your daily horoscope and no matter what your sun sign Sagittarius will be a primary issue — you’ll behave more like a Sag. Each house represents a different part of life, and wherever the planets are in the scope is where you’ll carry out those energies. Then we have to consider aspects and transits to those natal charts as well….A lot to absorb…

Sadge girl finds Cancer boy fascinating and confusing-and at the same time. You may feel simultaneously awkward and wonderful, because Cancer boy isn’t the easiest person on the planet to understand. While you’d like to give your full history in the first ten minutes of meeting someone, it may take two semesters to find out how many siblings this guy has. The beauty of this match lies in the discovery. ( Source: FUNgirl – Astrology )
The Cancer/Sagittarius relationship is one where both individuals should be ready for a fight the second they enter the romantic arena, since there will certainly be constant bickering and arguments are sure to flourish. The Cancer partner must be prepared to emerge from his or her shell and live life to the fullest if he or she wants Sagittarius to stick around as the Sagittarius native has no time for anyone who wallows in the depths of sulking. Here, Sagittarius will expect Cancer to follow along with his or her ideas and engage in a very active social life. There is nothing a Sagittarius native adores more than having fun…his or her definition of “fun,” of course. There will likely be times when the Cancer partner wishes to stay home…put the feet up and watch television. On such occasions, Sagittarius will try to talk Cancer into accompanying him or her. Should this fail, then the Sagittarius partner will simply go out on his or her own and find other excitement. By nature, Sagittarius is brimming with charm and also believes that personal freedom is paramount. Should Cancer take offense at this attitude or display a jealous reaction, then the Sagittarius mate will begin to feel as though he or she has made a serious mistake in choosing Cancer in the first place. Although the loving and nurturing manner of Cancer is what first attracted Sagittarius, it is not enough to keep this Sign faithful or true. In a physically romantic sense, Sagittarius is very active and, as a rule, Cancer is easily satisfied. Thus, the Sagittarius mate could begin to feel let down, depressed and unfulfilled. This is certain to send him or her in search of a new partner. In short, this is not a particularly favorable union.
The Cancer/Sagittarius combination is one where both individuals need to be patient and give the relationship time to grow and mature. If the affair is allowed to develop, then each will discover that they have much to offer the other. Initially, it simply appears as though Sagittarius is a thrill seeker who enjoys the occasional adrenaline rush and that Cancer derives far more satisfaction from emotional security. In the early days of the relationship, the Cancer individual is likely to desire more of a commitment than Sagittarius is willing to provide but with the passage of time, the Sagittarius native will learn to appreciate the strong emotional support that Cancer offers. These are two Signs that have very different approaches to life. Cancer survives on emotion and tradition…Sagittarius is a restless wanderer. The emotional tidal wave of Cancer can be difficult for Sagittarius to accept, to say nothing of overwhelming. On the other hand, Cancer might be resistant to accepting the Sagittarius mate’s restlessness and craving for external activities. Nevertheless, a Cancer partner can offer Sagittarius a secure home base…a place where Sagittarius can go to keep dreams and ambitions in persepctve…and the free spirit of Sagittarius could well lend Cancer’s daily life a little diversity and excitement.

Sagittarius + Cancer
Fire + Water = Steam
You might look like a knight in shining armour to the quiet and unassuming Cancer: they could be infatuated by your larger-than-life approach. In fact, you could sweep them off their feet. As they are very romantic, they will love the chase.
However, sensitive Cancer could also see you as a hard nut to crack. This is despite the fact that Jupiter and the Moon, your respective ruling signs, are friendly and work extremely well together. This relationship may not be destined to work in the long run, but you never know.
You are honest to the point of bluntness — at times insensitively so. Cancer will appreciate your straightforward and happy manner, but they are extremely sensitive to criticism and to your ruthless style of honesty.
Also, Cancer will do their best to hide their feelings from you at times, and they’ll succeed. They won’t be able to do it for too long, though — at some point your burning heat will bring the usually cool waters of Cancer to the boil. So there could be a few showdowns in this combination.
You must learn the art of diplomacy — not one of your better skills — if you want to make a successful go of a relationship with Cancer. The flipside of the coin also applies: Cancer needs a thicker skin to handle your outbursts.
Cancer is a sexual zodiac sign to you, so there’s hope for a hot affair. But it could be fleeting, because of the many basic differences between your temperaments. How much energy the two of you are prepared to give to this relationship will determine how long it lasts.
Things can get difficult with Cancers born between 22 June and 3 July. Hypersensitivity seems to be one of their key personality traits and they may not easily handle your rather direct and often extravagant nature. If you do happen to be involved with someone born at this time try to be a little more considerate of these delicate beings’ feelings.
You might find yourself very attracted to a Cancer born between 4 July and 13 July. But don’t jump straight in, boots and all. There are things that could make this one hard for you in both the short term and the long term. Look carefully at these individuals’ characters and their family history. How have they dealt with family issues? This will have a bearing on your connection.
You will feel comfortable with and drawn to Cancers born between 14 July and 22 July. This is because they have some of the Jupiter influence that controls your life. If you want to get close and win their hearts, cosy nights by the fire will do it.

SAGITTARIUS AND CANCER Cancer’s sensuality and romantic imagination intrigues inquiring Sagittarius. But Sagittarius is both venturesome and cerebral while Cancer is cautious and emotional, and this pair will never understand each other. Sagittarius can’t supply the security and stability Cancer needs or endure Cancer’s moodiness and jealousy. Without even being aware of it, blunt Sagittarius wounds sensitive Cancer at every turn. When Sagittarius seeks outside stimulation away from home, Cancer nags and whines and tries to hold on tighter. They’d be better as just friends.

how are the stars and horoscopes related?
Suggestion by Ehrykkh
Horoscopes are based on where in the sky-or, near what stars (of the zodiac)-certain planets appear . The only stars used in horoscopes are those of the zodiac belt-the constellations Scorpius, Sagittarius, etc. It’s near the zodiac belt that the planets are found.
In astrology, planets also include the sun and moon
A personal horoscope uses as a base what planets were where at the time of birth. For example, if one’s sun is in Leo (i.e., the Sun was passing in front of the constellation Leo), they can have the characterisitics of being bold and a life of the party. For a daily horoscope an astrologer takes the personal horoscope and predicts how they’ll relate to current conditions (the planets in the constellations as they are NOW)

By a figment of someone’s imagination. Stars and planets have no affect on your daily life. Horoscopes and astrology are both complete nonsense.
