Well, asking this in the Science–>Alternative Science section would probably get you a more answers. I do know a bit about Astrology though, so I can answer some of this.
Basically, you tell the Astrologer the day, time, and place you were born. Then they refer to their charts to see (from the perspective of the place and moment you were born) which zodiac sign the sun, moon, and planets would have been seen in.
Supposedly the sign that the sun was in can reveal your basic personality traits, the innermost structure of your character. The moon sign is supposed to reveal your outer emotional personality. The ascendant is the zodiac sign that is rising over the horizon at the moment of birth, and is supposed to govern appearance and self image. The position of the other planets is supposed to cause variations on the sun and moon sign readings. Then there are a host of other symbolic factors like nodes, ruling planet, and cusps that can vary the variations, and on and on and on. A chart that shows all of these different factors is called a birth chart.
I make NO claims about the accuracy of any of this, but if you’re really interested…
Your sun sign is just based on the date you were born, finding your sun sign should be easy. This is the common sign that everyone uses to read their daily horoscopes.

Sun sign : The sign in which Sun is transiting at that time (of birth). It is too well known and dates are given in another answer.
Moon sign : Sign through which Moon is transiting.
Rising sign (Ascendent) : 12 Zodiacal signs complete one cycle in 24 hours. Each of them takes 2 hours to cross a point in the sky along the path of Zodiac; in this case it is the Eastern horizon (‘rising’). Sun sign rises at Sun rise time, spanning 2 hours. after that the next sign for 2 hours and so on. Now, Sun enters ‘Aquarius’. So from sunrise to +2hrs it is the ‘rise’ sign followed by Pisces for 2 hours and so on.
What do you think? Answer below!
Can someone explain why I have a lot of Scorpio traits when I’m a Gemini?
My sun sign is Gemini and both my rising and moon signs are Capricorn, but I have a lot of Scorpio traits such as a penetrating gaze that even my Scorpio mother finds unnerving, a fascination with anything mysterious, fierce loyalty to family & friends, and I’m very vengeful.
To Annie (Level 4): I don’t stare randomly at my mother. Lol. If she or anyone makes me angry I glare at them, which tends to make them back off.
Here’s what my birth chart says:
Sun = Gemini
Ascendant = Capricorn
Moon = Capricorn
Mercury = Gemini
Venus = Aries
Mars = Gemini
Jupiter = Aquarius
Saturn = Scorpio
Uranus = Sagittarius
Neptune = Capricorn
Pluto = Scorpio
Lilith = Taurus
Asc node = Taurus
II = Aquarius
III = Pisces
IV = Aries
V = Taurus
VII = Cancer
VIII = Leo
IX = Virgo
Midheaven = Libra
XI = Scorpio
XII = Sagittarius
